Hridsko Jezero, Lake Hrid in English, has recently been voted as Montenegro’s most beautiful lake. Luckily, it’s located in my home town of Plav. The thought of it alone brings back some of my most fond memories. There’s nothing like a swim in that lake. Local legend says swimming in it’s special waters brings you good health and good luck in marriage. I’m healthy, but I’ll let you guys know how the marriage part goes. Either way, Lake Hrid is a must visit.

This alpine lake sits at almost 2km above sea level and is nestled under the two famous peaks Hridski Krs and Krs Bogicevica. They serve as a wonderful addition to a day at the lake. Take a couple hours to hike to these peaks, then enjoy a refreshing swim in it’s waters. To find the trail you will have to traverse a quick rock scramble to the base of Hrdski Krs. Then, you will see the steep trail winding up the hillside.

Know as “The Pearl of Prokletije,” Lake Hrid is perfectly hidden in a tall pine forest far from any other human settlements. It’s about 5m deep and situated on The Peaks of The Balkan Trail. Here you will find the peace you have been looking for. I guided two Belgians last summer who have traveled the world and they couldn’t believe what the found in our little Plav. The truth is the whole region of Plav and Gusinje hold these countless natural wonders that are so little known. Yes, here we are rich in terms of money, but extremely wealthy in natural beauty and Lake Hrid is a gem in our portfolio.

The lake is easily accessible from the village of Plav. You can either drive or hike. The road is rough so a jeep is recommended, but not necessary. The hike is long, but I recommend driving to Katun Bajrovic (pictured below), parking the car in the field next to the trail markers and taking the hour hike through the forest to the lake. All in all, Lake Hrid is a place you simply must visit when in the region. This gem hidden in the forest is the perfect place to spend the day immersed in nature. Get lost in the tall pines. Swim your worries away in the magic waters and maybe take a hike to the top of Hridski Krs.
