LAKE PLAV

Plavsko Jezero, Lake Plav in English, is the heart and soul of Plav. In fact, the town of Plav’s name is literally translated to, “Blue,” after the color of the lake. I spent my favorite summers on the docks of Lake Plav. On a nice summer day you will see these docks fill up with locals swimming, soaking up sun, riding kayaks, fishing and kicking a football around a in circle.

Plav lake is massive in size and is the largest glacial lake in all of Montenegro. It’s average width is about 920m and it is about 30m at its deepest. The lake and town of Plav are located at about 1000m above sea level. Offering a beautiful addition to the local Accursed Mountain Range.

The village of Plav sits just above the lake and offers easy access to everyone. This lake is special for many reasons. Lake Plav is filled with mountain run off and spring water originating in Oko Skakavice in Ropojana Valley , Ali Pashin Izvor and the surrounding Accursed Mountain Range. So much water passes through the lake that it cycles its water every 72 hours. The water you see when you visit will be completely different cycle of water you see 3 short days later.

With that being said, Lake Plav is very cold year round, but it serves as the best refresher during summer time. The docks provide easy access and make for great swimming. You can even test your diving ability on the 5m or 10m platforms built by the local eccentric legend and rap artist, Dempsy. During the season, the town of Plav provides kayaks and paddle boats that you can rent for a few euros per hour.

At the lake you are never short on things to do. If you like to fish, there are some great catches waiting for you in the lake’s depths, including some massive Pike. Keep in mind you need a fishing pass, which I can provide for you through Balkan Mountain Adventure. This and all other accommodations you may need while visiting my lovely home of Plav. You can even fly fish in the river Lim that feeds out of the lake. The European Fly Fishing tournament was held here in 2019.
